Role: Dr. Wei-nee Chen is a seasoned expert in sustainable energy and climate finance with over 15 years of experience in driving energy transition initiatives. Currently serving as the Head of Carbon Market at Bursa Malaysia, Dr. Wei-nee is responsible for overseeing the implementation of Malaysia’s voluntary carbon market (VCM). Since August 2022, she has played a pivotal role in establishing a VCM Exchange to support Malaysia’s carbon neutrality goals by 2050. Her work is focused on creating a robust carbon ecosystem that aligns with the country’s sustainability aspirations and addresses the global climate challenge.
Prior to her role at Bursa Malaysia, Dr. Wei-nee was the VP of New Energy Ventures at Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd, where she led the company’s transition strategy for the oil and gas sector, developing a comprehensive Sustainability Policy and Climate Change Framework. Her efforts spanned decarbonization, investment in clean energy, and climate adaptation initiatives.
Dr. Wei-nee has a wealth of experience in the renewable energy sector, having worked at the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia for nearly 15 years, where she contributed to the creation of Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap (RETR) 2035 and was instrumental in piloting the country’s first peer-to-peer energy trading platform.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Wei-nee is a passionate climate change advocate and has shared her insights on energy transition and sustainability at numerous international platforms, including the World Government Summit and UN roundtables. She is also dedicated to advancing gender diversity in leadership, with her doctoral thesis focusing on women’s participation in top management roles. Dr. Wei-nee is also an advisor to several industry organizations, including the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation and the Malaysian PV Industry Association.
